I'm also exploring image pairing. I have seen this done frequently in magazines and catalogs. The pairing of a portrait plus a detail shot may be more interesting to the viewer.

I like the pairing of photographs.
Diptychs allow you to compare and contrast and start conversations within the work, which is what you are trying to do with the Old / Young comparisons.
definitely a great idea. i think these images could be really interesting if you incorporate some extra texture layers into the photographs (like you've done with some of the rural & fair images.)
also, have you thought about how these images might be displayed/framed? what if you worked back into the images (staining?) to give them some "added age." or maybe 'photo corners'- for a small, scrapbooking pictures feel... or some really fancy old-time frames for bigger pieces?
